Chicago ranked 'rattiest city' in America for the sixth year running

October 18, 2020

Chicago has ranked first place in a list of the "rattiest cities" in the US for the sixth year running.

Orkin, an Atlanta-based pest control company, annually scores cities based on the amount of new rodent treatments required from 1 September to 31 August.

The list features 50 cities and, while most spots change each year, Chicago in Illinois has now remained in first place for six consecutive years.

Alongside Chicago, the top ten includes Los Angeles, New York, Washington, San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Denver and Minneapolis.

The bottom five cities on the list are Orlando, Burlington, Albuquerque, Dayton and West Palm Beach.

There was a big increase in Green Bay, Wisconsin, which saw it jump up by 18 spots, putting it at number 40. Meanwhile, Buffalo, New York, saw the greatest fall, moving down eight places to 43.

Champaign is the only other Illinois city appearing on the list, ranked at number 39.

According to Orkin, coronavirus restrictions have contributed to the issue. It said: "The pandemic-driven closure of restaurants forced rodents to find new food sources.

"Without food waste to consume, these pests were seen scavenging new areas and exhibiting unusual or aggressive behaviour."

It added: "As we approach colder months, rodent activity will only continue increasing as these pests seek shelter in warm areas with available food and water."

The company advised that people should "pay extra attention to the attractants that entice rats and mice".
