Electric vehicle charging points will be available from this spring in five Ryedale car parks to encourage drivers to transition to more environmentally-friendly vehicles.

Ryedale District Council has commissioned an electric vehicle charging contractor to install 10 units across the district, with two going in each of the following long stay car parks:

  • Cleveland Way, Helmsley
  • Town Farm, Kirkbymoorside
  • Vivis Lane, Pickering
  • Eastgate, Pickering
  • Wentworth Street, Malton

Workplace charging facilities will also be installed at Ryedale House, Streetscene Depot and North Yorkshire Building Control Partnership in Easingwold, as part of the Council’s move towards a greener fleet.

The provision of the charge points has been funded by a grant of £70,170 from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and the Energy Saving Trust in partnership with the district council.

Councillor Keane Duncan, leader of Ryedale District Council, said:

“The Council is delighted that the application for grant funding has been successful to enable us to introduce 10 electric vehicle charge points to five main car parks in Ryedale.

“Expanding the charging provision across the district will make life easier for citizens with electric vehicles, as well as attracting visitors who drive eco-friendly cars.

“We hope it may also encourage others to make the switch to a more sustainable mode of transport, which not only creates significant environmental benefits by reducing CO2 emissions, but also allows the owner of the vehicle to save money on fuel costs.

“As a council we have pledged to take action to reduce the district’s carbon emissions, and investing in green infrastructure will help us in our goal by promoting and enabling the practical use of electric vehicles.”

Charging costs are expected to be 25p/kWh in the first year of the scheme. Members of the public will be able to use the charge points via a mobile phone app and RFID card.
