Ryedale District Council is rated the best in North Yorkshire for its speed in processing new claims for housing benefit and a change in circumstances.

t’s also been ranked no.6 in the top 20 of local district authorities across the UK for its performance.

The rating is for Ryedale District Council’s performance between January and March 2020. Citizens applying for housing benefit for the first time, or who have had a change in their circumstances – especially due to COVID-19 are being helped as quickly as possible to receive the exact benefits they’re entitled to.

Councillor Keane Duncan, Leader of Ryedale District Council said:

“This is fantastic news for Ryedale District Council and an outstanding effort of all employees involved – they have been focused on delivering the best service possible, during a global pandemic.

“I’m immensely proud of the Benefits and Revenues team for achieving a top performance for the benefit of our citizens. It’s been our aim throughout this pandemic to support lives and livelihoods. We know that many of our citizens have had a change in circumstances and that the past few months have been difficult for many. This recognition shows that we’re delivering on our aim. ”

The news comes on the back of a recent accolade, where the Benefits and Revenues team was in the top 25% of councils across the UK for verifying earnings and pensions - with a top performance of 100%.

The Department of Work and Pensions runs an initiative called VEP (Verify Earnings and Pensions) alerts which sees them sharing HMRC RTI (Real Time Information) data with local authorities. The local authorities are then tasked with cross-checking the details and updating their system with any changes.

Ryedale District Council’s team prioritized this task to ensure that the details held about citizens claiming benefits is as up-to-date as possible. This once again ensures that citizens get the correct support they’re entitled to.

The top performance range in the region is 99% and the top performance range for England is 97.6%.
