City of York Council are asking residents interested in the work of the council to come forwards and get involved in some of the volunteer roles we are currently looking to fill.

There are currently vacancies for ‘Independent Persons’ and ‘Independent Member’ roles.

Whilst each role has a different remit, they are intended to give residents a chance to get involved with the work of the council, and ensure the highest standards are upheld.

The ‘Independent Person’ for the Joint Standards Committee is responsible for assisting with maintaining high standards of conduct amongst elected members for town and parish councils. Along with other tasks this means that where a complaint is received about a Councillor’s conduct the Independent Person will be consulted on the decision to investigate the complaint.

The Audit and Governance Committee also has vacancies for ‘Independent Members’. The role involves providing an independent focus on the audit, assurance and reporting arrangements within the council. Due to the requirements of the role, Independent Members are required to have financial management experience.

The current vacancies have arisen after previous role holders have come to the end of their term of office. To plan for the future and provide resilience the current campaign is looking to recruit several people interested in upholding and scrutinising the work of the council.

The roles are unpaid, but travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed. An application form and information including a role specification for each position can be found on the Council’s website, or can be posted out upon request.  The closing date for receipt of completed applications is midnight on Sunday 11 July 2021.
